IEC 62619 is the key international standard for safety requirements of lithium-ion cells and batteries in industrial applications — including stationary large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS).
The standard defines comprehensive test procedures at cell and battery level: short-circuit tests (external and internal), overcharge and deep discharge tests, thermal tests (cycles −20°C to +75°C), mechanical tests (vibration, shock, drop), propagation tests, and environmental tests. Each test has defined pass/fail criteria.
During technical due diligence and commissioning, expert assessors verify whether the deployed cells and battery packs are certified to IEC 62619. Missing certification is a material risk for investors and can jeopardize insurance coverage. PV-BESS-Assessor evaluates IEC 62619 conformity as part of every BESS assessment.
IEC 62619 focuses on cell and battery safety (product level). UL 9540 or UL 9540A evaluates safety at the system level, including thermal runaway propagation and installation. Both standards complement each other — a comprehensive BESS assessment verifies conformity with both standards.
