swa Netze GmbH operates the power distribution grid in the Augsburg area serving approximately 300,000 inhabitants. Augsburg is located in the TenneT control area. The responsible transmission system operator (TSO) is TenneT TSO GmbH. TenneT is responsible for system stability in the extra-high voltage grid (220/380 kV) and coordinates the feed-in of renewable energy at the transmission grid level. At the regional distribution grid level, Bayernwerk Netz is also an important player.

Augsburg's historic water management system is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. PV systems in the old town and along the Lech canals require special coordination with the Lower Heritage Protection Authority.
The Augsburg Textile Quarter (AKS, Glaspalast) is being converted into residential and commercial districts. The sawtooth roofs of former factories are ideal for PV โ however, structural load-bearing capacity must be confirmed by an expert assessment.
In the Augsburg urban area, both swa Netze and Lechwerke (LEW Verteilnetz) are active. The jurisdiction boundary sometimes runs through the middle of residential areas โ advance clarification is essential.
Bavaria is discussing a solar mandate following the Baden-Wuerttemberg model. As Bavaria's third-largest city, Augsburg would be significantly affected โ assessments regarding economic reasonableness are anticipated.
